How The Church Summons Demons

How did the German church allow Adolf Hitler to come to power? How did Christians come to summon those demons?

The German intelligentsia knew Hitler was crazy and racist. Mein Kampf told you that. So why did the German church go along with Hitler?

The German church approached Hitler pragmatically. Hitler could be used for good purposes. Yes, the man himself was completely antithetical to Jesus Christ, but the agenda and policies he stood for, these were good things.

Separate the insanity and immorality of the man from the good he would do for the country.

You could disagree--vehemently, as a Christian--with the racist motives behind Hitler's "Germany first" agenda, but still agree--wholeheartedly--with his Germany First policies. Did that support, then, make you, yourself, a racist? Of course not. There were very good pragmatic reasons for supporting Hitler. Hitler was crazy and racist, but Hitler's policies were good for Germany.

Who cares if Hitler had racist views, so long he made Germany great again?

And so, the German church summoned the demons.

How did American Christians come to summon the demons to our shores, emboldening a new generation of Nazis to carry torches through the night chanting "blood and soil"?

For the same reasons the German Christians did. Trump was a pragmatic choice. Admittedly, Trump was a little crazy. And true, he was no model of morality and virtue. And yes, Trump flirted with and his campaign energized white nationalists and white supremacists.

But all that could be bracketed because many Christians found the policies Trump espoused to have merit. A conservative Supreme Court justice. A border wall. Tighter immigration standards. Vigorous enforcement of the immigration laws already on the books. An "American first" approach to trade.

These polices were not inherently racist or xenophobic. Though, of course, racists and xenophobes would wholeheartedly agree with such policies. But that was just a sad, unfortunate coincidence. Just like how most of the German Christians who supported Hitler were not Nazis.

And so it was that 81% of evangelicals voted for Trump. Evangelicals and many other Christians viewed Trump's mental instability and the enthusiasm white nationalists displayed for his campaign the same way the German church viewed Hitler.

Trump might not be a good person, even a bit crazy, but he would make America great again.

And so it was, that the church, once again, summoned the demons.

As Your Doctor, I Am Protesting the Removal of Your Tumor Because I Don’t Want to Erase Your Medical History

“Sad to see the history and culture of our great country being ripped apart with the removal of our beautiful statues and monuments.” — @realDonaldTrump, 8/17/17

Thank you very much for coming in today to discuss the tumor currently growing inside your body. Luckily, we caught this fairly early on, so we have a few treatment options available to us. As you can see on this X-ray, the tumor is currently about the size of a baseball in an all-white baseball league. I could surgically remove it as soon as tomorrow afternoon. However, I will not be doing that.

I view this tumor as an important symbol of your body’s history and heritage. Removing the tumor would be yet another example of misguided medical correctness in today’s liberal America. I protest this surgery and refuse to whitewash your rich medical history. The tumor must be kept prominently displayed inside your body.

I understand why you’d want to remove the tumor. By removing it, we would stop the cancer from spreading to other parts of your body and you’d be on your way to recovery. Don’t you think, though, that your body’s fight against cancer should be commemorated in some way? What better way than by leaving the tumor completely intact? Medical Justice Warriors all want to dismantle the very fabric of everyone’s medical history and remove important memorials such as tumors, goiters, and gallstones. I want to celebrate that history and leave a monument to those awful memories inside your body forever.

As a medical professional, I want patients to celebrate the history and legacy of their illnesses. Tearing down tumors won’t serve that cause. A better solution would be to add more history to this issue. I propose we add a small inscription or plaque on the outside of your body, somewhere near the tumor’s location. The inscription should contextualize and describe the tumor, so that you and anybody else reading it can draw their own conclusions about the tumor. I will not be party to an erasure of history for the mere sake of your health. There are fundamental American freedoms at stake here.

You might be asking yourself exactly why I’m so passionate about leaving this awful, life-threatening tumor inside your body. Well, if I preside over the tumor’s dismantling, what’s next? Prescribing you medication for your pain? Starting you on a rigorous physical therapy program? Eventually getting you back to feeling healthy? The removal of your tumor is only the beginning of a slippery slope, the end of which will be sanitizing great swaths of your current medical condition. If liberal medicine had its way, no one would ever be able to tell that you were even sick. I refuse to censor your body and its past like that.

I do not believe the viewpoint that tumors “embody” or “represent” cancer. That is a straw man argument that I will not tolerate. It’s what the loudest voices have decided tumors do. Your medical history may not be perfect, but it represents the journey you have taken to get to this point of being sick and requiring immediate medical attention. That journey is what gets lost in these blind, partisan efforts to remove tumors.

Whatever your stance on this tumor may be, there is no denying its significance in your medical history. I will not take part in the zealous march to remove the life-threatening tumor from your body. To do so would be to participate in medical revisionism and body censorship.

We’re Standing Up to President Trump with Half-Priced Flatbreads Until 5 PM

Dear Customers,

Like many of you, we woke up on November 9 to an America we didn’t recognize. But what could we do? After all, we’re only a cozy gastropub, armed with nothing more than innovative recipes focused on locally sourced ingredients, a cocktail bar fully stocked with hundred of unique spirits, and a large heated patio.

But something inside of us told us we had to act. After much soul-searching and frank discussion with our loved ones about what our responsibility is to stand up to the authoritarian regime of a racist, sexist, xenophobic demagogue who threatens to undermine every American value we hold so dearly, we’ve made up our minds. We’re doing it: We’re offering half-priced flatbreads until 5 PM.

Did Rosa Parks give up in the face of hardship? Did Gandhi? Or Malala? No, they held fast and defended their beliefs. These heroes are just some of the many brave men and women on a long list of those who have endured adversity and fought for justice. Today, you may add another name to that list: Sus·te·nance, An Urban Brasserie.

Our team thought carefully about how we could make the biggest impact. Donating leftover food to reduce waste? Paying our staff a living wage? Something with veterans? But no, ultimately, we realized we would be derelict in our duty if we did anything short of offering a generous discount on each and every one of our artisanal flatbreads.

The President may be doing everything in his power to strip funding for PBS and the NEA, but too bad, because these flatbreads are works of art. We start with a perfectly crispy multigrain crust, made from scratch and then — whether or not Drumpf likes it — we top it with a variety of natural, farm-fresh ingredients. Sorry, President Cheeto!

Make your voice heard by placing an order consistent with your values. Outraged by Trump’s heartless travel ban? Stand up for tolerance by ordering The Bar None, featuring ingredients from each of the six unjustly targeted Muslim-majority nations, including a delicate mixture of Syrian olives, Persian onion, and a dash of the Yemeni spice mix hawaij.

Worried about Trump’s unprecedented conflicts of interest? Try our newest creation, made with a rich, creamy white sauce and hand-torn watercress. That’s right, white sauce and watercress — we know you’ll want to try The 2-Ws as badly as we want Trump to release his W-2s.

Terrified by Trump’s attacks on women’s rights? You’ll love The Grab ’Em by the Pizza, which is topped with a single egg, treated with the dignity it deserves and lightly poached.

You can also spread the word about how you’re helping us take a stand. Make sure to check in on your favorite social media platform and post about your dining/resisting experience with an activist hashtag, like #LoveTrufflesHate, #GarlicKnotMyPresident, or #NeverthelessSheProsciuttoed.

We know the road ahead won’t be easy. Many will say we shouldn’t “get political,” and should instead simply stick to providing modern twists on traditional dishes in a relaxed, refined atmosphere. But we cannot sit idly by as so many of our fellow Americans fear that their civil rights will be taken away. This is our solemn promise: We support our community, with unwavering resolve, any time before the dinner rush.

So keep fighting the good fight, and we’ll be right there next to you. Together, we can #resist President Trump, even if you can’t resist our delicious flatbreads.
